Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans is the CGI special effects remake of the 1981 cult classic mythical fantasy film of the same name that was enriched with Ray Harryhausen's amazing stop motion animation. The story is loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus (Sam Worthington), a demigod son of Zeus (Academy Award-nominated Liam Neeson) and Danaë (Tine Stapelfeldt), the wife of Acrisius (Jason Flemyng), the former king of Argos.
Many years ago, King Acrisius of Argos defied the Gods and Zeus punished him by impregnating his wife Danaë. When Perseus was born, Acrisius put him and Danaë in a coffin and set them adrift. Furious at his action, Zeus struck Acrisius with lightning, leaving him horribly disfigured. Perseus survived and was taken in by the fisherman Spyros (Academy Award-nominated Pete Postlethwaite) and his family. All grown up, Perseus leads a quiet fisherman's life until one day he and his family are at sea and witness a troop of soldiers from Argos destroying a statue of Zeus, declaring war against the Gods. When Hades (Academy Award-nominated Ralph Fiennes) responds by descending upon the troop as a flock of harpies, the family's fishing boat gets destroyed and Perseus' family perishes. Perseus is the lone survivor and the remaining soldiers take him back to Argos.
Meanwhile Zeus, the ruler and creator of humans, is wary of their wayward actions. Hades convinces Zeus that the humans need to be taught a lesson and it is time to release the Kraken, a formidable sea monster Hades had created to help the Olympians win the war against the Titans. Frustrated, Zeus relents, unaware that Hades has an ulterior motive. Hades has been waiting to seek revenge against Zeus for tricking him to rule the Underworld, when Poseidon (Danny Huston) got the sea and Zeus got Mount Olympus. Hades has found a way to harness the humans' fear to build his own power and hopes to be able to overpower Zeus with the heightened human fear.
Perseus is present when Hades arrives before the current Argos ruler, King Kepheus (Vincent Regan) and Queen Cassiopeia (Golden Globe-nominated Polly Walker), who have been busy feasting and comparing themselves and their daughter Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) to the Gods. In a rage, Hades kills the remaining soldiers who had survived the previous attack and ages Queen Cassiopeia (Katherine Loeppky) until she is old and dead. He gives King Kepheus the ultimatum that Argos will be destroyed if Andromeda is not sacrificed to the Kraken in ten days.
Revealed that Perseus is a demigod, King Kepheus seeks his help, but Perseus refuses. Thrown in the dungeon, he meets a woman named Io (Gemma Arterton), who never ages as punishment by the God Ares (Tamer Hassan) for rejecting his advances. She tells him about King Acrisius, his mother Danaë and Zeus and convinces him that he can get revenge against Hades by killing his beloved Kraken. Together with Draco (Mads Mikkelsen) leading Argos' finest soldiers, including Eusebios (Nicholas Hoult), and a set of Persian monster hunters named Ixas (Hans Matheson) and Kucuk (Mouloud Achour), Perseus and Io set forth on the quest to seek the Stygian Witches and learn how to kill the Kraken.
Back on Mount Olympus, the messenger god Hermes (Alexander Siddig) informs Zeus about his son Perseus and suggests that Zeus offer Perseus sanctuary. However, Zeus refuses, still angry with the humans. He does secretly leave a sword that only Perseus can use and offer the all black Pegasus, a sacred flying horse. Perseus rejects both his gifts and chooses to fight as a human without any help from the Gods.
On the way to the Garden of Stygia, the group meets Acrisius, now known as Calibos, who was given superhuman powers by Hades to kill Perseus and will not rest until he succeeds. They manage to injure him, but as he runs off, scorpions attack and kill many of their group. Fortunately they are saved by the Djinn, immortal magical spirits of Arabian mythology, and their leader Sheikh Suleiman (Ian Whyte) joins the quest to stop the Gods from destruction. Eventually they arrive and after some convincing, the Stygian Witches reveal that they can only kill the Kraken by using Gorgon Medusa's (Natalia Vodianova) head. Furthermore, the witches warn that everyone on the quest will die, causing many to leave the group.
Zeus tries to reach out to Perseus once more and even offers sanctuary. Perseus refuses again and only agrees to take a golden drachma. With merely an ancient Greek coin and their human and Djinn powers, will Perseus and his dwindling group be able to defeat the powerful Medusa, Acrisius, the Kraken and Hades to save Andromeda, Argos and prevent a war of the Gods? Will Perseus remain true to his human self in the process or will he ultimately be forced to use his demigod powers?
There will be a Clash of the Titans sequel directed by Jonathan Liebesman and it is set to start shooting in January 2011. Unlike the first film, which was converted into 3-D, the sequel will be shot in 3-D.
Warner Home Video has plans to release Clash of the Titans on Blu-ray 3D, but no date has been announced yet.
