Melbourne, Florida, July 1, 2014 – This is the third edition of the Central Florida Outdoor Recreation Examiner. This month camping season should be in full swing. Families all across America are making lists, collecting their camping gear and heading into the great America outdoors. Unless you do not have a day job and glued to your home computer, you probably do not have a lot of time to search for more cool stuff to add to your already bulging list of camping equipment. So hopefully, I can give you a few ideas of some new stuff to take along on your next camping trip.

Do you have a camping air conditioner in your list? Let me tell you summers in America are not getting any cooler. A few years ago while vacationing in the Florida Keys, my family and I did a day trip to Bahia Honda State Park to do a little kayaking. While at the park I spoke with a camper that had a window air conditioner mounted on 2x4 lumbers and propped up in his tent. He said that it gets really hot in the Keys during the summer and he wanted to keep cool when he and his family slept. He said that the only dray back was the noise the A/C made and the campground staff complaining about how much electricity the air conditioner was using. Well here is a solution for those campers who want to stay cool at night. There is a camping air conditioner called “Go Cool” that you might be interested in. The Go Cool is a portable air conditioner that uses Ice and water to cool dehumidify and filter the air in your tent or virtually any enclosed space. The Go Cool air conditioner is totally portable. It gives off no Exhaust and is very quiet compared to a conventional window air conditioner. Just fill the Go Cool with ice & water and plug it in to any AC or DC power source and presto, change you have many hours of cool air. This just the perfect camping gear accessory to add to your list. Ok yea, and it is made in the USA!

If you are like me, you need your Cup of Joe to start each day. Now some of you might just lug around a Mr. Coffee on all you camping trips, but you do not have to do that to get a perfect cup of coffee. Have you see the Melitta Pour Over Travel Mug Set? This is a great way to easily brew your coffee while camping.

When I go into the great outdoors there is one thing that I do not look forward to and that is mosquitoes. I cannot tell you how much I hate these little pesky insects. These days there are loads of different insect repellant products on the market from sprays to special clothing. And the cost of some of these repellants can be quite expensive. There is a new product available online and through retailers called “Mosquitno Band”. It is a silicone rubber wrist band infused with citronella oil. It is DEET Free. It comes in adult and kids sizes. It even comes a as a stick that can be applied on any surface or stick to your clothing or hat. If you are a fisherman, you know the hazards of getting DEET on your hand or lures or in your bait bucket. This new repellant product just many give you more freedom to get out in to the great outdoors earlier in the morning or later at night.

You know how drinking water has gained popularity over the past years and you see loads of people carrying their water bottles with them? What all the bottles that are carried have small openings instead of those big wide openings. NATHAN Sports, who has been designing hydration vests, belts, handhelds, bottles, running packs, active visibility and reflective vests, and other gear for road warriors, ultra runners, triathletes, couch to 5Kers, and every dedicated outdoor recreation athletes, has developed what they call a “Bigshot Narrow Mouth” water bottle that has a sleek, narrow mouth for easy drinking and is water-filter compatible. Check out this bottle the next time you are upgrading your hydration system.

Tent camping, I grew up on tent camping. Coming from a family of six children, my mom and dad could not afford hotels when we went on vacation so we tent camped. We had two big cabin tents made by Sears all packed with all our gear into a six feet by 12 feet wooden trailer. My dad hauled the trailer behind our 1960s VW Microbus. Tent camping is a favorite pastime of many American families. But in Europe, I must say it may even be more popular than here in the United States. When my family and I were stationed by the USAF in Heidelberg, Germany during the 1980s, I saw firsthand how popular this sport was. When summer came the Germans hit the road along with the rest of Europe. As we traveled about sightseeing all the great locations in countries a day’s drive from Heidelberg, we saw many different types of tents and camping trailers. As we move ahead to 2014, there have been loads of innovations and improvements to the old canvas tent we use to use forty years age.

Because of high global gas prices, people have tuned to smaller and small vehicles that get the best gas mileage. This has had a big impact on tent camping as the space in these small cars does not allow one to carry much camping gear along with them. That is a problem looking for a solution. Well in 2010, using the genius of the Swiss Army Knife, MisC Sport & Leisure created a small, foldable and multi-function” removable motor-home set up that will fit most cars. It is called the swissRoomBox®. This foldable camping-car equipment gives you freedom for your travel and outdoor adventures. It is a bit pricey. But it just may be the right camping tool to give you the outdoor freedom you are looking for.

In today’s action packed outdoor recreation arena, it seems like every one wants to on camera. GoPro has blazed the trail in the outdoor action camera like Sony did with the Betamax. Only time will tell of GoPro can keeps its market share. JVC, a global is a leading developer and manufacturer of sophisticated audio and video products that use superior technologies to deliver high quality sound and images. They have been designing and manufacturing video cameras for as long as I can remember. JVC has rolled out a new outdoor action camera called the ADIXXION Action Camera. This small, hand held camcorder has been enhanced for 2014. According to JVC, the new camera includes a 1080/60p full HD recording, an improved gyro-sensor image stabilizer, expanded viewing angle, enhanced low light performance, upgraded Wi-Fi functions, and a 16MP Ultra-Resolution Digital Still mode. This camera is pocket-sized and weighing barely a quarter pound. The ADIXXION is waterproof to a depth of five meters (16.4 feet), shockproof to withstand a fall from two meters (6.5 feet), dustproof and freeze proof, all without the need for a separate housing. In addition, ADIXXION also includes built-in Wi-Fi, 1.5-inch LCD monitor and dual standard tripod mounts for use with a wide range of accessories.

This camera is packed with all the right features to give the outdoor adventure the right tool to capture stunning action packed videos.

I have been suing my GoPro Hero 3 + Black camera for about six months now. This camera has loads of accessories to mount it on almost every type of surface. The photos and videos are great. But there is on part of owning this camera that needs help. It is the battery life. Just when you need to record more action, boom, the power is gone. Well you do not have to suffer with short battery life again. Brunton Power is coming out with a new Brunton Extended Battery Back. It will not be available until August 2014. It is compatible with the GOPRO HERO3+, has a Standard USB input and output and has four times the runtime of the GoPro battery. It comes with a water and shock proof case. You can place you’re advanced orders on web sites like B&H.

As July kicks off with the 4th of July long weekend, pack your bags and your car and head for the great outdoors. Mother Nature is waiting to show you a great time. Do not forget when packing your gear to take a great flash light with you. The Olympic RG850 puts out 850 lumens of amazing LED light when using the flashlight at full strength.

Each year in July the International Convention of Allies Sportfishing Trades (ICAST) hold their yearly fishing show. The show takes place either in Las Vegas of Orlando, FL. This year and in 2015, the show comes to Central Florida. This is “THE” place to see all the new fishing gear that will be coming out next year. I will be reporting on the show later in the month.

Until next time, be safe in the sun and have a great day in the great outdoors.
