Floria Sigismondi's The Runaways is a biographical film inspired by Cherie Currie's Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway. She was the lead vocalist of the 70's all-girl teenage rock band that quickly swept the nation and received international acclaim. The Runaways headlined shows with opening acts such as the Ramones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Sex Pistols and Blondie. The group was formed in late 1975 and dissolved in April 1979. The Runaways wrote and performed their own songs, becoming quite an influence for many female rock musicians during a time when it was male-dominated.
In late 1975, both rhythm guitarist Joan Jetts (Kristen Stewart) and Sandy West (Stella Maeve) approach record producer Kim Fowley (Academy Award-nominated Michael Shannon) separately and express interest in forming an all-girl band. After joining forces, Fowley suggest they add a hot blond chick to their band. Their search leads them to a club where they meet the young 15-year-old Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning). After a bad audition singing Suzie Quatro's "Fever," they come up with the later highly acclaimed "Cherry Bomb" for Currie to sing. 16-year-old Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton), joins the group as the lead guitarist. Jackie Fox completes the lineup as the bassist, however since she did not want any part in the movie, her name was changed to Robin (Alia Shawkat).
After initial success in South California, The Runaways sign on with Mercury Records and release their debut album of the same name, The Runaways. Following the success of their first album, they release a second album Queens of Noise in 1977. A world tour sends them to Japan where The Runaways is the fourth most popular for imported music behind ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. The fans' excitement has often been compared to "Beatlemania."
Behind the fame and parties were darker truths and struggles. With Currie's mother (Academy Award winner Tatum O'Neal) overseas in Asia and an alcoholic father, she is left with only her sister Marie (Riley Keough) and the aunt they stay with before Currie goes on tour. The rest of the girls lack adult supervision as well. Thrust into the intense music scene with Fowley, they experience the sex, drugs and alcohol of the rock 'n' roll era. There is plenty of booze, cocaine and even a kiss shared by Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart when Currie and Jetts experience an intimate moment.

My absolute favorite movie of the year and my pick so far for best picture. Been a huge fan of Dakota since the 2002 Syfy Miniseries Taken.
