Julie Michelle: I live here + benefits and big name art stars

This is looks to be a super busy week for the arts in San Francisco. We have barely recovered from winning (GO GIANTS) and now, we've got First Thursdays, a First Friday and a couple of benefits for worthy causes to attend, support and review. (An art reviewer's life is so difficult at times).

Julie Michelle at SOMArts

Julie Michelle of I Live Here:  This is an exciting show not only because of the high caliber of the photography, video, and installation work in the show, but also because it is the first Commons Curatorial Residency that SOMArts has awarded. Come to the opening celebration Friday, November 5 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This ongoing, community-based photography and creative writing project investigates the myriad cultural and personal nooks and crannies of San Francisco as well as the lovely, lively, kooky, exiting, and entertaining inhabitants therein.

With this award Julie Michelle has composed an exhibition that shares the spirit and fascinating layers of this city through the words and faces of those who live here.  This ongoing, community-based photography and creative writing project investigates the myriad cultural and personal noooks and crannies of San Francisco as well as the lovely, lively, kooky, exiting, and entertaining inhabitants therein. Her warmth and caring come though so that even the "camera-shy" tell their stories, illuminated by her insightful photographs.

SF's galleries will be showing some big names in the art world:

Andy Goldsworthy at Haines Gallery:

Haines Gallery is proud to present Incidental Objects, an exhibition exploring the conceptual process of British installation artist Andy Goldsworthy. Though popularly known for his ephemeral pieces that disappear over time, Goldsworthy has dedicated a large percentage of his focus toward the completion of over 120 commissioned, permanent installations over the past 25 years. For the artist, these permanent and temporary works function symbiotically, with temporary or experimental works often aiding in the development or realization of these commissions. Goldsworthy’s exhibition at Haines Gallery highlights some of these “incidental” works, providing a rare view into the conceptual nature of the artist’s process.

Ed Moses at Brain Gross Fine Arts

Renowned Los Angeles painter Ed Moses opens a solo exhibition, wic wack, at Brian Gross Fine Art on Saturday, November 6, with a reception for the artist from 3-6pm. While Moses is known for his innovative, non-objective abstractions, the works on view explore pattern and figuration through fabric stencils, animal motifs, and face-like forms. The exhibition continues through December 23.
