Ms. Julie Chadwick, Hostess of Vegan Happy Hour
It started 3 years ago, the brainchild of Julie Chadwick. Bartender, grad student, vegan and all around badass rock chick. What started you ask? Vegan Happy Hour at the Shortstop in Echo Park. Julie thought starting a Vegan Happy Hour at the bar where she worked was a good way to learn how to cook vegan food, shortly after she decided to go that route. She combined it with one of her regular happy hour shifts and wham Vegan Happy Hour was born. It has really taken off and is one of the more popular Happy Hours in Echo Park. It’s on the occasional Thursday night from 5pm-9pm but because Ms. Chadwick is a grad student studying landscape architecture at UCLA, her time is tight and she shuffles the happy hour around her school schedule. Make sure you keep a good eye on the Vegan Happy Hour’s Myspace page for the evolving schedule. Julie often provides for the crowd of revelers what has now become her legendary vegan chili. So good even non-vegans rearrange their plans to be there to grab a taste. If you want to check it out you better come early before its gobbled all up.
Martini surprise at Vegan Happy Hour
Vegan Happy Hour at the Shorty is a great way to meet like-minded vegan folks and to showcase some bomb ass vegan food to some non-vegans, to help them understand that vegan food is not all grass and kibble but can be really great tasting food. Oh and to have some cocktails, lots of cocktails because the best happy hours are really all about the cocktails.
Julie behind the bar at the Shortstop in Echo Park
For Julie being vegan is about her love of animals and she does her best to live a cruelty free life, being vegan is part of that for her. Julie is one of the busier people you will find in Echo Park. Besides bartending at the Shortstop where she puts on Vegan Happy Hour, she also owns her own landscape design business GROW. They specialize in eco-friendly, low water, and native gardens. Julie is also in the rock band “Hello Dragon” where she kicks ass and takes names playing guitar and singing. This Echo Park vixen does it all. She cooks amazing vegan chili, pours a wicked drink, throws an awesome happy hour, rocks an ax like nobody’s business and she can design your eco-friendly yard, making it the envy of all your Echo Park neighbors. She’s so much more then a triple threat!
Swing by Vegan Happy Hour this Thursday December, 17th and remember, it's potluck style so bring something to share with the rest of the bar.
