Julie Andrews missed "The Sound of Music Live" so you can't really ask her what she thought of it. On Dec. 10, ABC News reported that the original "Maria" hasn't given her stamp of approval (or disapproval) on "The Sound of Music Live" starring Carrie Underwood... because she didn't watch it with the 18 million people that did. And while you might think that this sounds like a fabulous way for Andrews to dodge the question -- but she's such a wonderful lady... she would never do such a thing... right?
"Alas, I did not (see it). I had a speaking engagement and I couldn't. But my kids did record it. I'll get around to it," said Andrews.
Julie Andrews saying that she missed "The Sound of Music Live" can be taken a bunch of different ways but it sounds like she just had an engagement on the night that it aired. People tend to read into things way too much -- and while Andrews may have been unhappy with the show, she would never say such a thing. She will probably love it and appreciate it, for what it was... the theatrical version of "The Sound of Music" performed live in Prime Time.
And anyway, Andrews knows what it's like not to be appreciated or to be criticized for a role -- she went through it herself. In the interview (on the red carpet for "Saving Mr. Banks"), Andrews talked about how "Mary Poppins" author, P.L. Travers, didn't approve of her for the role as Mary Poppins -- but she was a-mazing!
So really, who cares if Julie Andrews missed "The Sound of Music Live"? When she watches it, she will undoubtedly comment on how lovely she thought it was.
