What’s next for you?

Jay Roach (director): The authors of the [“Game Change”] book — Mark Halperin and John Heilemann — are busily working on the next book. I’m not sure what the movie might be based on that book. We made [the “Game Change” movie] out of a section of that book, and we might do the same. We’re not really sure. We haven’t read it, and they’re working like crazy to write the sequel book.

Jay, you’re known mostly for making comedy films. Now that you’ve done “Game Change,” will you be doing more political films?

Roach: Could be. I love making political films. I got started in comedy almost by accident. I love comedy too though, and I’ll keep making both. I really just love telling great stories. It just so happens that right now, I don’t talk about anything but politics.

I drive my family crazy because I’m so interested in what makes government work, what makes a great leader, and all the questions we all have. It’s a constant source of anxiety for me. This is what me and my friends talk about all the time. Can we do better than this? Can’t we do better than this? For the 21st century, we should be able to, but these films are about exploring those questions.

Did you talk to Tina Fey, who’s also famously played Sarah Palin? Did you trade notes?

Moore: No, we didn’t. I was actually glad I got to mention her in my speech tonight, because I do think what she and Katie Couric did in 2008 was truly extraordinary, and they really did change that election, very subtly. And within their own industries they were quite powerful political presences.

What made Julianne Moore so perfect for this role of Sarah Palin?

Roach: Good question. First of all, just a commitment to getting it right. I’ve never seen anyone work as hard. I’ve never shared or collaborated with someone who cared more about making sure it was right. It went for all of us producers and HBO. There was something about Julianne Moore.

If we didn’t have her, try to imagine making this film with anyone else. It just doesn’t seem possible. It wasn’t that hard once we figured out she could transform her look, there was no other way to go.

Julianne, did anyone come up to you on the street to tell you that they weren’t happy with you playing Sarah Palin?

Moore: No. Nobody did. In no way was this a biopic, and in no way was this a character assassination. This was a story about our political process and how we choose our leaders. We tried to be as fair as possible.

And one of the things I found in my research is that she’s an incredibly devoted parent and cares very much about what she does. And the conclusion that I drew was that she was simply unprepared for the vice presidency. Other than that, that’s all we were really saying.

Why did you say yes to doing such a daunting role?

Moore: I don’t know why I said yes. It could have been vanity. But literally, I got off the phone and went, “Why did I say yes” I only have two months! I can’t do this!”

But the great thing was the tremendous amount of support I had. I really meant it when I said this was one of the best jobs I ever had. Danny Strong’s script was extraordinary. Really, I mean, really, it was foolproof! It was all there.

And Jay [Roach] was a true creative partner. He was there every day giving me so much structure, support, direction and help that I didn’t feel like I was on my own. We all loved coming to work.

Even my hair and makeup people say, “Oh, what a great day. All these people are so great.” Amy Sayres, who was so amazing producing. And [executive producer] Gary Goetzman was there every single day. People really cared about this. It was great for me.

Danny, are you coming back to “Mad Men”?

Danny Strong (writer): I don’t know. I have no idea.
