Julianne, 25, is a two-time professional champion of "Dancing with the Stars" who won Season 4 with her partner Olympic gold medal-winning speed skater Apolo Ohno, making Julianne the youngest professional dancer to win on the program. Julianne and her partner, three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Hélio Castroneves, became the winners of Season Five.
Therefore, Julianne knows what it is like to be judged as a professional dancer.
When people heard that Juianne was going to be a judge, they immediately reacted saying she was going to favor her friend Mark Ballus and her brother Derek Hough whom she is known to have a close relationship with. However, none of that came true on Monday's show.
Julianne was honest and fair with her judging. You could see that she became more comfortable as the show went on. Her scores were the same as the veteran judges' scores. Besides, she didn't hold back when it came to delivering honest critiques to the stars.
At the top of the show, Julianne described herself as a "fair and honest judge" and that her judging was not about the professional, but rather the celebrity dancer.
Derek, who has won four mirror balls himself, said it wasn't weird at all to see his sister sitting at the judges' table during his performance. He explained:
"Julianne and I are so honest with each other I understand what she meant tonight. She said she kind of wanted there to be something she could say [to critique the performance] so that she wouldn't seem biased. But I know that if she wanted to she would have taken much pleasure in doing that."
Derek added that it was fun to see his sister embracing her judging responsibilities. He says, "It was great she did a really great job, and I was really proud of her."
Dancers found Julianne’s presence a breath of fresh air since she can relate to exactly what they’re going through.
