Julianne Hough had a tough childhood. That is the focus of a new interview in People Magazine. Julianne opened up about her upbringing in a Mormon household, and it was not easy for her or her brother. Derek Hough is her older brother, and the pair have become household names because of their time on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Derek has risen to champion status on that reality series, but he was told by his father to not thrust his hips on stage when he was growing up. Travelers Today shared Julianne and Derek's story on June 23.
Julianne revealed much about her career and her childhood. At the age of 10, her parents were in the middle of a divorce when they made the decision to send Derek and Julianne off to London. Once they arrived in the city, they attended Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts. Their parents did not make the move with their children to London. The Hough siblings moved in with the parents of Mark Ballas. He is also a professional dancer with "Dancing with the Stars."
Mark and Derek have remained especially close throughout the years, and now the reason for that friendship is clear. Earlier this year, Mark and Derek made news when they purchased a home together in California. The small home is located in the San Fernando Valley, which is close to the studios where "Dancing with the Stars" is filmed. Derek also directed a music video for Mark, and he was a member of the Ballas Hough Band.
Julianne did not have it easy in London. She was forced to grow up before her time. At the age of 10, she was performing dances that were more appropriate for much older girls. Her parents did not want to hold back Julianne and Derek though. Their parents did visit the siblings in London, but the pair were very much on their own. Bruce Hough, their father, said the following: "It was a very difficult time for our family. We didn't want them to have to choose between their parents, and they had a great opportunity in England."
Julianne and Derek have taken their tough upbringing, and they have turned it into successful careers. Both have become celebrities thanks to their appearance on "Dancing with the Stars." Each of them has taken time off from the show to film movies. Julianne has launched a film career. She has appeared in "Footloose" and "Safe Haven" in recent years. She also starred in the campy "Rock of Ages" with Tom Cruise and others.
Derek's career has taken the leap to movies too. He starred in "Make Your Move 3D." The dancer has won the mirror ball trophy five times since he joined the series full time for season five. He came in second place with Amy Purdy during season 18. Derek will release his first book detailing his life in August. The book is titled "Breakthrough Moments: Lessons from a Life in Motion."
Season 19 of "Dancing with the Stars" will air on ABC this fall, and Julianne might return to the series. Fans will need to tune in to find out if that happens.
