Julianne Hough's 'blackface' Halloween costume didn't win the pretty actress and dancer any points for creativity. After the former Dancing With the Stars professional showed up at a Halloween party dressed as Orange Is the New Black character "Crazy Eyes," as portrayed by actress Uzo Aduba, she had a lot of explaining to do. According to an Oct. 28, 2013 report by The Huffington Post, Hough wound up apologizing for her costume via Twitter.
But was Julianne Hough's blackface really blackface? What is "blackface"? According to Merriam Webster, blackface is "makeup applied to a performer playing a black person especially in a minstrel show; also : a performer wearing such makeup."
The Encyclopedia Britannica includes this information about the practice: ". . . blackface minstrelsy was performed by a group of white minstrels (traveling musicians) with black-painted faces, whose material caricatured the singing and dancing of slaves."
Julianne Hough's blackface apology explains the costume choice this way on Twitter: "I am a huge fan of the show 'Orange is the New black,' actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
