Julianne and Derek Hough score Starz ballroom dancing show

Dancing with the Stars” fans have an extra treat in store for them in the not so distant future. According to Entertainment Weekly, the pro-sibling dancing duo Derek and Julianne Hough are reportedly involved with a scripted series dubbed “Blackpool” for Starz.

Julianne, who is a lady of many talents, is credited as not only a professional dancer but is also a singer and actress as well. For some people that would be enough but this young star will be adding to that list as she will apparently executive produce the series that reportedly explores the “darker side of the glamorous world of ballroom dance,” according to the network.

Her brother states, “Viewers are going to see a twisted, sexy, funny, dark and passionate side of the drama and politics in the world of ballroom dance that delves deeper than spray tans and sequins.”

Where did they get the name “Blackpool?” Apparently the series’ focal point will be the Super Bowl of ballroom dancing with the annual competition taking place in Blackpool, England; a very familiar place to the pair.

The Houghs were apparently an easy choice for the project. Julianne has shown great promise in many areas of the entertainment industry and Derek certainly is far from a slouch as he has three Emmy nods for his reality television choreography efforts.

It will be interesting to see whether or not the show will live up to fans’ expectations. “Dancing with the Stars” has built a huge audience over the years so “Blackpool” should be rocking DVRs for at least the first few weeks based on that alone.

The true challenge will be to retain the audience from there.
