Top-seeded Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca from Brazil won the international beach volleyball ConocoPhillips Grand Slam in Stavanger, Norway, July 3 and earned their third SWATCH FIVB World Tour women’s gold medal along with US$43,500.
It only took them 43 minutes to defeat third-seeded Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes who also hail from Brazil in two sets of 21-17 and 21-17 once again (click here to watch the video!). This win marked Silva's and Franca's ninth defeat of Antonelli and Antunes during eleven matches throughout the last six years. It also earned them their 43rd tournament title since teaming up in 2004.
Naturally, the silver medal prize money of $29,500 went to Antonelli and Antunes who had to take the long way to the final after being defeated in their pool early in the competition.
For Silva and Franca this win also scored them enough points (3,580) to secure the #1 spot on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour ranking board by bumping down Americans Jen Kessy and April Ross (3,340).
The American team only placed ninth overall after losing 19-21, 21-15 and 15-9 to Juliana and Larissa Friday afternoon and then being defeated in two sets by Barbara Hansel and Sara Montagnolli of Austria.
The bronze medal went to Branagh and May-Treanor who claimed their first-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour podium placement along with the prize money of $23,000.
