Julian Lennon adds commitment to lupus charity with new title of patron

DEC. 7 - Julian Lennon has joined the St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust as a patron to help raise funds and awareness about the disease, the organization announced Tuesday.

“I am incredibly honoured to become a patron of the St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust in London and I hope this news would have made Lucy equally proud as there is a great need to spread more awareness about this illness in the UK,” Lennon said in a statement issued by the trust.

He became associated with the charity after learning his childhood friend, Lucy Vodden, who had been the inspiration for the Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," was suffering from the disease. The young Lennon brought home a drawing from school that pictured Vodden and told his father, John Lennon, "That's Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

Vodden died in 2009 at age 46.  After her death, Julian Lennon released the single "Lucy" to raise funds for the St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust and the Lupus Foundation of America.

“We are delighted to welcome Julian on board and I’m sure he will be a great asset in raising the profile of Lupus and our charity worldwide,” said Angie Davidson, campaign director for the St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust.

For most this is an unknown disease, but my mother passed away with Lupus. Her case was severe and she also died early on. Thanks Julian for helping those with this disease that affects so many organs of your body, anything that has connective tissue such as heart, lungs, kidneys and joints just to name a few.
    Thanks Julian for caring!!!!!

    Thanks, Julian. You're wonderful.

There is so much unconventional research and wisdom out there these days with the internet and so many patients and families willing to share their stories.

    Lucy would be proud. :)

My friend found out about Lupus when she was 14, thats when she found out she had it..We diden't know anything about it. Even as a child, I wanted to know more about it, went to the library to look it up. (too my shock )Nothing!! Just medical books that you cant read anyway! People need to know what to expect so they can get a hold of there mental state. Well 2 kidneys later-and all kinds of meds. She's doing very well.. I would like to see more out there on Lupus..Just to keep up on new meds and treatments.. Thank you for helping,, XOXOXO....!

1 year anniversary finding out that I have lupus. I am lucky as it not full blown but the symptoms are random. I am all over the place like a sponge looking for information that is current and reliable. I recently found Julian's site and that he is helping with a foundation. Thank you Julian, I hope you will be rewarded with all the happiness you deserve for your charity work. I want badly to contribute physically but at present can only donate monetarily but it all helps. Much more to say but don't want to hog the space! xxx
