Julian Casablancas + The Voidz announce release date for new album 'Tyranny'

The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas announced the release date of his new album with The Voidz on Monday (June 23) via Twitter. The alt-rock group will release the record Tyranny in September.

Casablancas first previewed new music with The Voidz back in March with a distorted teaser video. They have since hit the road a few times to perform some material from the upcoming album. Fans had heard the Julian Casablancas + The Voidz songs live but there was not an announcement made about the new album until today.

According to Spin.com, Casablancas issued a press release to explain the Tyranny album title.

"Tyranny has come in many forms throughout history," he said in the statement. "Now, the good of business is put above anything else, as corporations have become the new ruling body. Most decisions seem to be made like ones of a medieval king: whatever makes profit while ignoring and repressing the truth about whatever suffering it may cause (like pop music, for that matter)."

Casablancas also released a new trailer clip for Tyranny today (which can be seen up top). Julian Casablancas + The Voidz will drop their album on Sept. 23 via the rocker's own Cult Records. A digital copy of the new record can be pre-ordered on Casablancas' official website for the unbelievable price of just $3.87. This will be his first album without The Strokes since 2009's Phrazes for the Young. Casablancas and The Strokes returned last year with the quietly-released record Comedown Machine.

More tour dates for Julian Casablancas + The Voidz were announced with the new details about Tyranny. Casablancas will headline FYF Fest in L.A. this August as well with The Voidz on one night and The Strokes the other.
