Last year Motes made headlines when she revealed she had problems with her famous sister. In an interview with The Sun she stated that she and Julia were estranged but noted their relationship was a work in progress. After struggling with weight issues for years, Motes underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2010.
In the interview she talked about growing up with her famous sibling. “When you’re in a family of very, very exceptionally beautiful people it’s intimidating. I think that growing up as Pretty Woman’s little sister has definitely made me try to see the person inside and not the person outside. A lot of my life I felt judged for my weight.”
After Motes graduated from high school she wanted to go to Hollywood to become an actress like her older sister the Daily News reported. Nancy Motes is 9 years younger than her famous sister. She and Julia share the same mother, Betty Lou, and she is the daughter of Betty Lou’s second husband, Michael Motes who are now divorced.
Roberts, who was raised as a Christian, is now a practicing Hindu. After the release of her film, “Eat Pray Love” Roberts revealed her new found faith in Hinduism. The sadness over this tragic death is sure to bring up raw memories of her childhood. Julia was only 10 when her beloved father Walter died of cancer, and accordingly was totally grief-stricken by this sad event and even today she has had little to do with her stepfather who was said to be abusive.
According to People, the family issued a statement, “It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes…confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose. There is no official report from the Coroner’s office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated.”
In May 2014, Motes was planning to get married to her fiancé John Dilbeck.
No word yet from Julia Roberts’ camp. The actress was recently nominated for an Oscar as the Best Supporting Actress for her role in “August: Osage County.”
This tragic news comes just a week after actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died from a heroin overdose. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Roberts' family.
