Judy Garland Movie to star Anne Hathaway

JUDY GARLAND

The Weinstein movie company has announced that Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-nominated actress is to play singer-actress Judy Garland in both film and stage adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s 2000 biography. It’s titled “Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.” Hathaway was nominated for an Oscar in last year’s film “Rachel Getting Married.”

Judy Garland will always be best known for starring in 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” and singing its Oscar-winning ballad “Over the Rainbow.” Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM in 1939, wanted Shirley Temple for the role of Dorothy, but 20th Century-Fox refused to loan their top star to MGM for the now classic film. MGM turned to teenager Francis Gumm, renamed Judy Garland, to star. When Mayer screened the film, he wanted the song deleted! He felt it was too sophisticated for a young girl to sing.

In 1954 she had an Oscar-nominated role in the musical remake of “A Star is Born.”

Here is Judy Garland singing "Get Happy" on British tv in 1969. She was anything but, happy....she died six months later from a drug overdose at the age of 47.

Stop It!! I hate seeing these Biopics of the greatest stars of all time. These are legends they cannot be touched by someone of our era. Anne Hathaway just does not have what Judy had. If you are looking for an actress to portray the greatest star of all time you need to find someone who has the magic that only Judy possessed. Judy was not like anyone else and no one has ever come close to being what she was. Leave her alone, and let her legend live for itself.

What a disappointment to have a non-singer performer/actress star in a such film.....This would have been a wonderful opportunity for someone like Christina Aguilera not only to act, but to perform these Classic Judy songs with all the feeling and soulfulness Miss Judy Garland had, especially in her live performances during her concert years in the 1050's right through the end of her life. The Similarities between Christina and Judy are uncanny. Not only in physical stature, Judy was a petite woman with a huge voice and so is Christina!!! Both woman began performing at early ages, had a huge voices as young girls, had father issues, and most importantly that "voice”. Ms. Garland and Ms. Aguilera share this unique characteristic.
It would be wonderful to have Ms. Aguilera star in such a film. Especially with so many young people interested in musical movies and TV shows. I believe this would be the IDEAL ROLE for Ms. Aguilera. This role reminds me of Barbra Streisand playing Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl”. The ideal actress playing the ideal role!!!!

UGH...I so agree with your sentiments. And news is currently brewing about Beyonce remaking 'A Star Is Born'...what hubris. The only way to honor Judy's amazing talents is in documentary form. There isn't a creature on this planet, nor any yet to be discovered, who has the talent or the magic Judy has.

Wasn't there another film about Judy Garland other than the one starring Judy Davis. I started watching a film once but the power went out and I haven't ever found it again. I have a vague recollection that it starred Natalie Wood. Am I wrong?

yes, but Judy Davis looks more like judy from afar than Ann Hathoway.
