Focus 4 -- June 01, 2010 to September 24, 2010
Opening Reception Friday, June 11th 5-7pm
Judith Raphael solo exhibition at the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery.
Judith Raphael's figure paintings depict young girls softly painted and at an awkward stage between being a girl and womanhood. Feminine pastel backgrounds with subtle decorative patters lay in the background as young girls command the action and attention of the canvas. Adolescents at the start line, ready to run a race grasp the viewers attention as they glance at each other out of the corner of their eyes. Dignified young ladies pose with musical instruments in a portrait series. Contrapposto in pose and in feminine dress, duel figures display their adolescent angst while other paintings depict childhood freedom and being invincible as a group of girls parachute out of the sky.
A doyenne of the Chicago and New York art worlds, Judy Raphael maintains a studio in both cities.
Judith Raphael is one of four solo shows with Jacqueline Moses, Kevin Veara, and Mel Watkin being featured at the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery.
