Prosecutors allege that Oscar Pistorius strapped on his prosthetic legs, walked the seven yards to the locked bathroom and fired four shots through the door, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp who was hiding on the other side according to a report by the Los Angeles Times on Feb. 19.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel of the Pretoria’s Magistrate Court called Pistorius’ actions premeditated murder.
Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair agreed with prosecutors. For the matter of the Olympic athlete’s bail hearing, the charge would be premeditated murder – a charge that is very hard to get bail for. South African law mandates that anyone charged with a category six offense, the most serious type of offense, must show exceptional cause as to why they should warrant getting bail.
With this ruling, Pistorius could spend months in jail waiting for his trial. A conviction on the charge of premeditated murder would mean life in prison.
Steenkamp's family was attending the funeral of Reeva at the same time as the ‘Blade Runner’ was facing his bail hearing.
