Judge: Baker cannot refuse to make wedding cake for gay couple’s marriage

Saturday, after a Colorado baker was ordered in court to "cease and desist from discriminating" by refusing making cakes for gay weddings, the baker pondered whether to appeal the court’s decision, according to an ABC News article.

Friday, administrative law judge Robert N. Space decided that Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Denver broke the law after he refused to make a wedding cake for David Mullins, 29, and Charlie Craig, 33, last year.

Spence ordered that Phillips "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples who need a wedding cake. The judge said that the baker will face fines if it happens again, and he used a Colorado state law that prohibits businesses “from refusing service based on race, sex, marital status or sexual orientation,” according to ABC News.

Mullins and Craig wanted a wedding cake in Colorado for their wedding and went to the Masterpiece Cakeshop in July 2012. After they were refused, the couple visited the American Civil Liberties Union and the filed a legal complaint.

Phillips said that it was a story policy not to provide baked goods for a same-sex wedding, and he stated that his own religious beliefs play into his decision.
