Iconic rock band Judas Priest won its first-ever Grammy last night, winning for Best Metal Performance for Dissident Aggressor.
The award was presented during the afternoon non-televised ceremony. Frontman Rob Halford was present to accept the award and was even sporting a tuxedo.
"Fifth time is the charm," said Halford, noting this was the band's fifth Grammy nomination and first win. "Judas Priest has been making heavy metal for over 35 years. We love what we do."
Judas Priest has received a lot of media attention over the years for various incidents, including the 1990 lawsuit in which the band was accused of inserting subliminal messages in songs that led to the suicide of two fans. The suit was eventually dismissed.
Halford also received considerable press in 1998 when he came out of the closet as a gay man, an announcement that was unusual in the world of heavy metal music.
Through it all the band has persevered and now has recognition from the Recording Academy.
