Like a spike in the heart of all metal fans, the Metal Gods, Judas Priest have announced today that legendary guitarist K.K. Downing will retire from the band effective immediately.
The 59-year-old guitarist has been with the band since since it’s inception some 42 years ago. Last December, Judas Priest announced that the Epitaph World Tour would be the band’s farewell to the fans, allowing them one more chance to see their metal icons live. The tour is expected to run through 2012.
This puts the future of Priest in jeopardy as the band had said in January of this year that the end of touring would not be the end of the band;
“…this is by no means the end of the band. In fact, we are presently writing new material, but we do intend this to be the last major world tour.”
At this time the band nor K.K. have announced any reason for his sudden retirement, but it is a sad day indeed for so many fans who will have to settle for less when Priest hits the road this summer.
The band’s website released the following press release this morning:
"It is with regret that Judas Priest announce that K.K. DOWNING has formally retired from the band and will therefore not be joining them on their forthcoming EPITAPH Tour.
"The band respect his decision and naturally all wish him well."

Downing will be replaced on the Epitaph tour by 31-year old former Lauren Harris guitarist, Richie Faulkner.
