Judas' Kiss - by Petra

Have you ever thought "I wonder what it's like to be God?" What does he think of us? What does He experience when he looks down upon us? And what would it be like for Him to come down to earth, live a perfect life, only to be hated, feared, and rejected?

The song "Judas' Kiss," from Petra's 1982 album More Power to Ya tackles these types of questions, concluding that the emotional pain He experienced, and still endures under certain circumstances, must be similar to the very intimate betrayal of one of his twelve closest disciples.

Interestingly enough, this song was released at a time when Christians were discovering that some mainstream songs played backwards had hidden messages, knownst or unbeknownst, to the artists performing them. (Examples included: Led Zepplin, Prince, and Queen)

As you will notice, this song starts with a message that is purposefully meant to be played backwards. Dallas-Fort Worth Christian station KOJO 94.1 one time addressed this controversial piece of rock music, and a faithful listener and Petra fan in Arlington, named Réne Girard, was quick to play his cassette tape (with the ribbon twisted to play backwards) over the phone for the DJ's to hear, record, and play on-air for their curious audience.

As you may guess, the message was far from Satanic, although the band still had it's detractors.

Lyrics to Judas' Kiss:

I wonder how it makes You feel when the prodigal won't come home
I wonder how it makes You feel when he'd rather be on his own
I wonder what it's like for You when a lamb has gone astray
I wonder what it's like for You when Your children disobey

It must be like another thorn stuck in your brow
It must be like another close friend's broken vow
It must be like another nail right through You wrist
It must be just like, just like Judas' kiss

I wonder how it makes You feel when no one seeks Your face
I wonder how it makes You feel when they give up in the race
I wonder what it's like for You when they willingly disobey
I wonder what it's like for You when they willingly walk away

It must be like another thorn stuck in Your brow
It must be like another close friend's broken vow
It must be like another nail right through Your wrist
It must be just like, just like Judas' kiss
