Juan Manuel Marquez earned a lopsided unanimous decision over Mike Alvarado on Saturday night at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The 5-foot-7 Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) officially trumped the 5-foot-9 Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) by counts of 119-109, 117-109, 117-109.

A brilliant tactician with thunderous power, Marquez consistently landed flush jabs that left Alvarado’s face bruised, cut and swollen.

Sensing a beaten man, Marquez floored “Mile High” in the eighth with a vicious overhand right.

"I said it was going to be a tough fight and I said it was going to be a difficult fight," said Marquez, 40, whose chest was curiously marred by acne. "I wanted to give the public here a gift. A gift that dignifies the history of this event and the history of the Forum. I wanted to make this fight a gift to the fans."

Despite getting victimized by accurate combinations, Alvarado managed to test Marquez.

Displaying impressive testicular fortitude, Alvarado sent the graying Mexican to the canvas with a right in the ninth.

"I knew I needed to let my hands go to create some more shots for me,” said Alvarado, 33, a former junior welterweight champion. “The way the fight went, he backed up and he felt the power from me so he fought a good fight."

Although flawed and ready to get knocked onto Queer Street for the first time in his professional career, Marquez remains a gifted counterpuncher and one of the premier Mexican boxers ever.

With a fifth match against “The Fighting Pride of the Philippines” looming, expect Juan Manuel Marquez to lose to Manny Pacquiao for a third time in the late autumn.
