JPFO vs. SAF: a gun battle of gun groups

See also

Reports are flooding the Gunnersphere, most linking back to a Claire Wolfe blog, that JPFO is being "handed off to SAF."

JPFO is Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. They've been considered the premier gun rights group by many thinking self-defense advocates because of their uncompromising position on gun ownership, while SAF, The Second Amendment Foundation has been criticized for repeatedly sending out scare tactic emails that inevitably end with "Send more money!" appeals.

So what does it actually mean to "hand off" JPFO to SAF?

The storyline from Wolfe is that the late JPFO founder Aaron Zelman wanted to fight victim disarmament until he could declare a win while Alan Gottlieb was seen and despised by him and many others as wanting to turn SAF "into a fundraising factory."

To make that work you need perpetual threats from the gun control crowd.

(The gun control crowd, for its part, needs perpetual advocacy from the gun rights groups to make their fundraising efforts work too, but that's another article.)

Now, as Wolfe reports it, the JPFO board of directors has "hatched a plan to hand JPFO over to SAF" and its sister organization/political arm/lobbying group Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA).

The merger will be finalized by the end of August if JPFO supporters don't stop it.

Although JPFO "struggled badly" after Zelman's death in 2010 it's been making a strong comeback in terms of membership, contributions, personnel and sales.

The bottom line here seems to be that JPFO's "dedication to absolute hardcore gun rights" could not and can never "live at peace" with SAF/CCRKBA's "chronic compromising."

There will likely be heated discussion and disagreement over all of this from ardent gun rights people but for now there's little to go on other than Claire Wolf's blog report.

A great friend of Libertarian News Examiner and of JPFO explained why this is so:

"A big part of the problem is that the board tried to do this in secret and even lied about it, so there is no other source right now. They're not talking about it. I have not yet gotten any response from SAF, but don't really expect them to verify anything either. This was supposed to be a done deal before anyone knew about it, and only Claire blowing the whistle gives us any chance to stop it."

Claire Wolfe has a petition and a plan to save JPFO. Read A Plan Takes Shape near the end on her report.

Time is running out.
