Joy Behar leaving ‘The View’ after 16 years

Co-host Joy Behar is leaving ABC’s daytime talk show “The View.” After a few more months of sad goodbyes, she will let her current contract expire unrenewed as of August. Joy was one of the original participants, along with co-creator Barbara Walters, who is now an executive producer, reports Deadline on Thursday, March 7.

“I have a lot of friends there [at “The View”], and I will miss everyone I’ve worked with because we have a family there,” Joy Behar said. She will spend the rest of her time on the show focusing on the people she has worked with, especially Barbara Walters. “Barbara was one of the main reasons I took that job,” she insisted.

Joy Behar leaves “The View” after 16.5 years of almost constant attendance, through years on top and years not so well received. “It seemed like the right time,” she said in a recent telephone interview. “You reach a point when you say to yourself, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’ There are other things on my plate I want to do — I’ve been writing a play, I’ve been neglecting my standup.” Once a standup comic, always a standup comic. But on “The View” she will be missed.
