Advent means coming or arrival. The celebration of Advent by Christians is the anticipation of the coming of the Christ Child as well as his anticipated return as Christ the King.
Come here daily in December for your Journey to the Manger. Readings here will look at the symbols of advent and provide suggested readings and meditations.
On Day 9, look to the Jesse tree for the earthly lineage of Jesus. The genealogy of Jesus is listed in the Gospel of Matthew bginning with Abraham through King David to Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke begins with Adam, through the lineage of Mary, also a descendent from David.
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
~ Isaiah 11:1-4
Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
~ Matthew 1:17
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
~ Translated from various 12th Century antiphons by John M. Neale, 1851.
Suggestion: Make a symbol of a stump or branch for your Advent tree. Or make a Jesse tree. A Jesse three shows the ancestors of Christ from Jesse, the father of King David. Here's a source for making your own Jesse tree: Let's Make a Jesse Tree!: 26 Full-size Patterns
