Welcome to night three of the "Journey Into Nyx" previews on DailyMTG.com. There is no particular order to the previews on the "Magic: The Gathering" site and there is no particular order here as well. With that in mind, here is the next card:
Ajani, Mentor of Heroes - 3GW - Mythic Rare - Planeswalker - 4 - +1: Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three target creatures you control. +1: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal an Aura, creature, or planeswalker card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. -8: You gain 100 life
Everyone knew Ajani was coming to "Journey Into Nyx," but did they think it was going to be like this?
Ajani's first ability will certainly make GW aggro decks a little more harder to handle. Their ability to play creatures quickly and effectively is among the best in the Standard format right now. Creatures like "Voice of Resurgence," "Soldier of the Pantheon," and even "Experiment One" gain significant boosts thanks to the counters Ajani will be feeding them.
His second ability is very good as well. Particularly in more aggressive decks where you're not playing much else besides Auras, creatures, and planeswalkers, the only time you may miss is if you hit a land. Combine this with something like "Courser of Kruphix," who falls into the same colors as Ajani, and you have a very powerful combo.
Both abilities add loyalty to Ajani. This will make triggering his ultimate ability much easier to achieve. It's end result is 100 life. That is a lot of life to gain off of one source, and it will cause a lot of issues for those who have to play against it. It will be even more of an issue if a player is able to trigger it more than once in a game.
Casual players will definitely get a kick out of Ajani as well. Him plus a card like "Doubling Season" will paint a target on your head faster than you can say "Good Game."
"Journey Into Nyx" hits stores on May 2. Prerelease events will be held the weekend of April 26 and 27. It will then be released online May 12. Finally, Game Day events will be held the weekend of May 24 and 25.
