Journaling for the New Year: Some prompts

See also

Even if you don't journal on a regular basis, this time of year is a perfect one to take a moment to reflect on the past year and to envision the new one. Here are some prompts:

1. The Year in Review

To the best of your memory's ability, note the biggest events of each month, how they made you feel, and most importantly, how you feel about them now.

It is always interesting to see how things that may have seemed huge and/or awful at the time have bought about something unexpected (and hopefully positive), or how something which seemed quite insignificant at the time initiated something life-changing.

2. Gratitude

Take some time to list all the many things you have to be grateful for, from the tiniest thing (cozy pajamas?) to the most important (family? good health?)

Noticing and acknowledging the positives in our lives helps us to see more positives, even in the darker times. This change in perspective reaps many rewards: a sense of hope and meaning, even better physical health and lower anxiety.

3. The Year to Come

Write a journal entry dated for this time next year and write it as if it is that date. Tell about all the amazing things that have happened - your book is published, you performed a solo in the concert, you got a new and better job, etc. - whether think they will happen or not. Just putting your dreams and hopes (not "shoulds") into writing makes them real and you can point your path in that direction. (Be sure to hang onto this entry and read it next year to see how you did!)

Wishing you a Write New Year!
