Joss Whedon to direct Marvel's 'The Avengers'

According to Deadline Hollywood, Marvel has signed a deal with Joss Whedon to be the director of The Avengers.

Weeks after the announcement that director Joe Johnston picked Chris Evans to be Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America, a growing list of directors of who would direct The Avengers was made by Marvel. Jon Faverau counted himself out, but Louis Leterrier and Joss Whedon were among the names on the short list.

The film would include all the lead heroes from each of their respected films.

Paramount Studios would distribute the film

Whedon's credits include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Angel," Serenity, "Dollhouse" and upcoming Cabin in the Woods.

While there are mixed reactions on Marvel hiring Whedon as a director of a film of this size, I can honestly say that he isn’t the person for the job. This is way to big of a film for a man like Whedon to handle. Yes he created "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and "Angel," which were two very successful television series. Then came "Firefly," which was cancelled hastily by Fox. Serenity was a mediocre hit at the box office, and "Dollhouse" barely on anyone’s radar. Marvel is taking a huge risk by giving Whedon a man who has directed one film.  Not only that it was a film from his previously cancelled television show.

There are a few positives that I can honestly say about Whedon is that he has shown that he can control a large ensemble cast.  He has also worked with Marvel on "Antonishing X-Men" which means he does have some comic book creditinals.  It remains to be seen on whether or not he can pull it off.  Though it may be too soon, maybe we will see what his vision in at the San Diego Comic Con this year.

If Dollhouse is his latest and 'greatest', I'd have to agree with you that he's not up to the job!

I think Joss Whedon is an ideal choice. He's had some unfortunate battles with studio brass over his projects in the past, which may account for the lack of support or focus issues of his recent work. Still, Whedon's totally in synch with the Marvel universe. This is a great marriage of filmmaker and material. We should reserve judgment until "Avengers" comes together.

    Whedon is the man

@ Gavin, well that is an interesting choice. Given the fact that Whedon has worked with her, I would have to agree

@ Jorge I am not entirely convinced he can do it. Whedon may have cred for comic, but so does Kevin Smith and he can't direct. While I am not entirely convinced he can direct, I will be making my full opening once I see a trailer.

    I believe in Whedon
