One of Bakersfield's talented and rising young jazz musicians will be returning to town this week for a clinic/concert at the Bakersfield Jazz Workshop. Saxophonist and current New York City resident Josiah Boornazian is in the middle of a West Coast tour that includes appearances in Fresno, Los Angeles, and Bakersfield.

An accomplished musician, composer, and music educator, Boornazian has been making quite a name for himself in the jazz world. Local jazz fans may remember seeing him at the weekly Jazz Workshop jam sessions and at other gigs around town.

He left Bakersfield to earn a Bachelor of Music degree at Cal State Northridge, then went on to obtain a Master of Arts degree from City College of New York. He currently teaches undergraduate music classes there as an adjunct faculty member as well as providing instruction for several private students.

He has appeared at the Reno, Monterey, and Bakersfield Jazz Festivals, and notable Los Angeles area jazz venues such as the Jazz Bakery, the Blue Whale, the Baked Potato, Catalina's Jazz Club, and Vitello's. His skill has brought him considerable acclaim as well, with his ensemble winning first place at the Reno and Monterey festivals in 2010. In addition, he was named Most Outstanding Saxophonist after that Reno performance.

Boornazian has also been busy in the recording studio, having completed several albums as a sideman, collaborator, and leader. The latter includes his 2010 release, Intersection, and a 2013 album featuring his original compositions entitled, Josiah Boornazian Quartet: Live at City College.

His appearance at the Jazz Workshop on April 16 begins with a clinic at 7 pm, followed by a concert. The event, which is free and open to all ages of the general public, will be held in the main dining room of Le Corusse Rouge, located at 4647 White Lane in Bakersfield.
