Season 5 Sunday Best Winner, Joshua Rogers has been a busy man since winning the competition a year ago. He has toured extensively to promote his debut release and introduce himself to the larger church body. Joshua's sophomore release 'Unconditional' comes out on Tuesday, October 29th, which is highly anticipated. Joshua took some time out his busy schedule to talk about life since Sunday Best and the new project.
AB: What has life been like since we last spoke?
JR: Life has been great. I have been doing a lot of traveling. I got a chance to go to the British Virgin Islands as well as The Bahamas. I recently left London for the start of my promo tour for the new album. I have been able to meet a lot of great people and work with some as well.
AB: What are some major things you've learned thus far from your first album to your sophomore project?
JR: I have definitely learned that this journey calls for a lot of hard work. The process of my first album many things I had to learn firsthand. I've learned a lot about the promotional work behind an album and the background work to make a project successful.
AB: How is this second project different from the first one?
JR: The second project for one is a full length album with all original music. The content is very versatile on the album. I tried to make sure that no matter what genre you listen to, there is a track that you can relate to and enjoy.
AB: Did you write any of the material on this album, if so how many?
JR: I wrote four tracks on the album. I wrote the title track 'Unconditional' on my own. The others I helped write, like the lead single 'So Good'.
AB: How do you feel about your songwriting now?
JR: It's coming back, it is there with me. Keep praying for me (laughs). The producers of the album were very supportive of me writing and being a part of every aspect of the album. They were not selfish and allowed me to be creative. I usually just write and don't have music in mind, which I feel is a bit of a handicap for me. The producers and I sat and vibed to come up with some great musical concepts, then lyrics to match them. I learned from the producers of my first album that it is more than just putting some words to a melody. You have to make sure each component accentuate each other.
AB: I see the title is Unconditional, why did you choose that as the title?
JR: Well, for one, as far me going through different things over the past year I have made a few mistakes. But, with that I have been encouraging a lot of people about getting back up after a mistake is made. We as people of God go through a lot of things, but knowing God forgives you allows you to get back up. The Bible teaches that a righteous man falls seven times, but he gets back up. God's love is unconditional and unwavering, His grace and mercy allots us the opportunity to come back unto Him.
AB: Who produced the album? Any guest artists collaborating with you on the album?
JR: The producers for the album are Pierre Medor and Bruce Robinson. The album does not feature any other artists, thus I am really anxious to hear what the people have to say about the album. I am looking forward to the next project to do some collaborations.
AB: What's your favorite song on the album, why?
JR: That is definitely a hard question, but I have two. "I Trust You" and a little medley of "As the deer"/"Draw Me Nearer". I am young, but have a kind of old soul and I love the hymns.
AB: How do you think you have grown as an artist from your first project to now?
JR: I have learned a lot vocally, which I thank Kim Burrell for truthfully. I have learned about control and a lot of little things that make a big difference. The emotion and theory behind the music, as well as how to lift my heart and put it all into the music and song. I really did my best to connect with this album through my vocal training over the past year.
AB: Where shall you be promoting the album at next week? Any tours in the works??
JR: I am actually on my promo tour right now. I am on my way to Atlanta for today and tomorrow. I will going up and down the east coast for the next two weeks as well to promote the album.
Joshua Rogers' album will be available in retail stores across the country, iTunes, and Amazon.com.
