With the 2013 minor league season in the books, plans are already being made for the 2014 Chicago Cubs minor league season. The 2014 Iowa Cubs stand to have a very different look on the offensive side. One player likely to return in 2014 is Josh Vitters. The Cubs announced on Tuesday that Vitters is being moved to left field in 2014 and will not be playing winter ball.
Vitters was the third overall draft pick in the 2007 draft, being drafted behind only David Price of the Tampa Rays and Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals. He has played the majority of his career at third base with only a handful of games at first base and in the outfield. Vitters moved between first base and the outfield after the Cubs acquired Mike Olt at the trade deadline this season.
The Cubs have a log jam at third base with Olt, double-A all-star Christian Villanueva, and first round draft pick Kris Bryant also at the hot corner. Bryant appears to be on the fast track to Chicago and will likely see time with Iowa in 2014 unless he goes straight from Tennessee to Chicago.
Vitters had a forgetful 2013, spending the majority of the season on the disabled list with various injuries. Vitters appeared in only 28 games for Iowa, hitting .295 with 5 HR and 12 RBI.
