Josh Smith trade rumors suggest a Phoenix Suns trade is in the works with the Atlanta Hawks. According to a report from Thursday (Jan. 31), exploratory talks between the two teams have already begun. With the stage set for the Hawks to finally part ways with their impending free agent, it looks like Smith could be a nice fit for the Suns.
Phoenix has apparently been in the market to land a star player, but the franchise struck out on trying to sign Eric Gordon as a restricted free agent and then failed to put together a good enough package for Rudy Gay. Now Smith comes up as an option who could step right into the starting slot at power forward and reward the loyal fan base with a star player to cheer for again.
When it comes to matching up salaries in any proposed deal, Phoenix has a number of players that could be placed in the trade. Most of the players on the current roster are locked up for multiples seasons, though, so the Hawks would likely want some good talent to come back. Maybe one player that could really interest Atlanta is Marcin Gortat, especially since he could be the new power forward to replace Smith.
If a Smith trade is intended to bring back flashy players in return, the Atlanta Hawks might not be able to come up with a suitable Phoenix Suns trade. Maybe Michael Beasley could be looked upon for offense, but everyone else (other than Goran Dragic) seems more like a role player than a team leader. Unless the Hawks are planning on selling low in this deal, maybe it's better to pay attention to other Josh Smith trade rumors out there.
