Josh Gad in new 'Gilligan's Island' movie: Cast rumors, producers set for film

A new “Gilligan’s Island” movie is in the works, and while cast rumors abound as to who may star in the TV show to film adaptation this week, Josh Gad has confirmed that he will be helping to write and act as a key figure in the upcoming film. Producers have also been set, and they boast a strong connection with the show's creator. While some fans of the popular television show are excited to see their favorite characters come alive once again on the big screen, some others feel that with a new cast and modern Hollywood moviemaking, it simply won’t be the same. MSN Movies tells fans this Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, what has been revealed so far on the still in-development flick.

With funnyman Josh Gad at the helm in terms of writing, it’s little doubt that the new movie spin on “Gilligan’s Island” will be a humorous one. The actor is preparing to work with a still undisclosed cast — several casting rumors are already being made, but nothing is confirmed at this time — and joining 1600 Penn’s Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit to co-write the adaptation’s script. In terms of the executive producers set for the film, it will be the children of the “Gilligan Island’s” TV show’s original creator, Sherwood Schwartz, behind the scenes (namely Ross Schwartz and Lloyd Schwartz).

Additional casting updates and even knowledge of who Josh Gad will play in the new “Gilligan’s Island” movie remains under wraps for now, though it’s expected that information will be leaked or revealed before too long in 2014.

“The popular TV comedy, which ran from 1964 to 1967, centered on seven castaways trapped on an island and their efforts to escape. The series spawned an animated series and a musical.”

Though some fans are certainly looking forward to “Gilligan’s Island” starring Josh Gads, other people’s comments show concern or even dislike of the potential film. Say a few readers via MSN:

“It won't be the same. We got used to the cast of this and other TV or movies and the replacement of the principal characters doesn't work. It didn't work with The Lone Ranger, The Wiz or many other beloved shows most recently The Sound Of Music that was done live. Isn't there enough talent in Hollywood to come up with something that doesn't have to be plagiarized for script material?”

“Boo...Hiss...Boo...there was only one Gilligan's Island cast and crew...Hollywood needs to leave all the old and best shows and movies alone.”

“ I don't understand why Hollywood continues to make movies out of TV shows. I loved Gilligan's Island growing up and watching reruns when I was in my 20s. Now that I am almost 50, am I going to go see the movie? No! I think most people my age would have the same answer. Who is the demographic then? The largest percentage of moviegoers are 25-39 and I'd bet that many in this bracket have never even seen the TV show. Why would they want to see it in a theater? Are these TV to film movies even that successful? I know that there are a handful that have been, but for the most part they are all clunkers. As well as most sequels that are made just for the almighty dollar. For my $10.00 ticket and $15.00 soda and popcorn purchase, is to much to ask for an original, smart, well written script? Jeez.”
