If you're looking for a unique place to snorkel or scuba dive when visiting Miami, try the Jose Cuervo Reef. Only 200 yards from the white sands of Miami Beach, it lies in less than 20 feet of water and is a great place to snorkel or scuba.
On May 5, 2000 (Cinco de Mayo, or in this case "Sinko de Mayo"), a cement structure shaped like a bar with six bar stools, along with a collection of tetrahedrons, was sunk just east of the 2nd Street Lifeguard Tower off Nikki Beach on South Beach. The structure has since become home to dive enthusiasts and a large variety of colorful tropical fish as well as lots of corals and sea fans.
Sponsored by Diageo on behalf of the Jose Cuervo tequila brand, the artificial reef that resembles a margherita bar is made of 10,000 lbs. of concrete. It makes for great novelty underwater photos or just daydreaming while diving.
Be sure to check with the lifeguards at the 2nd Street Lifeguard Tower to determine if the conditions are right for your abilities before you go. Rental equipment and information about snorkeling trips to this and many other reefs can be found at the following places:
