Jose Aldo Forced to Withdraw From Championship Fight at UFC 125

Bummer.

Just when the injury bug had seemingly disappeared from MMA for a while comes the unfortunate news that newly minted UFC Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo, has been forced out of his upcoming title fight with contender Josh Grispi at UFC 125.

The news came from Heavy.com as they broke the unfortunate happenings earlier today.   According to ESPN's Josh Gross, Aldo suffered a compacted vertabrae and had tingling in both arms and that is what forced the withdrawal from the card.

Unfortunately for both Aldo and the UFC, this was to be the new champion's first title defense after the WEC/UFC merger, that saw Aldo come over as the reigning WEC Featherweight Champion.

To make matters worse, Aldo was scheduled for the co-main event slot. Add to the fact that UFC 125 is scheduled for January 1st, and is the annual New Year's card, and this is a perfect storm of bad luck for the 24 year-old Brazilian.

The main concern, obviously, is the recovery of Jose Aldo in a timely and effective manner, but what about Aldo's opponent Josh Grispi?

Well, as far as Grispi goes not much is being reported as of right now.  It would be very unfortunate if Grispi lost his spot on the coveted New Year's card, as it would be a superior stage for him to showcase his talents.  And with the influx of talent coming over from the merger, I find it hard to believe that the UFC won't find a suitable replacement.

On the plus-side if Grispi doesn't have to fight, he wouldn't have to tame his New Year's celebration.  And I suppose he could still come to Vegas.

Bummer...
