Monday, Joran van der Sloot’s lawyer, Luz Marina Romero Chinchay told HLN that van der Sloot lied about several claims during the time she represented him. Romero said that she was hired by van der Sloot during his confession, after he refused a public defender and said he wanted a private attorney. According to Romero, she asked him if he wanted her and he said yes. She asked him about payment and he said his mother would pay.
Van der Sloot is in a Peruvian prison and has filed a lawsuit against attorney Luz Marina Romero Chinchay. Van der Sloot claims that Romero was forced on him, and she only became represented him because she was in a relationship with a police officer. Van der Sloot’s new attorney is Maximo Altez.
Romero told HLN that the allegations are simply not true.
"I asked (van der Sloot) if he wanted my services and he said yes," Romero said. "I told him the on-duty defense attorney was present and I asked him if he wanted to give a statement through them. He said no, he wanted a private defense attorney."
Van der Sloot asked to speak to her privately and the prosecutor, a police officer and a translator left the room, and they made a verbal agreement that she would represent him.
Afterwards, the other three people returned and van der Sloot gave his confession.
Van der Sloot is now claiming that he never asked Romero to represent him.
Romero also told HLN that van der Sloot's Spanish is perfect. But van der Sloot claims that he didn’t understand the language well enough to understand what he signed during the confession. Romero advised him not to sign anything.
Referring to the new attorney, Romero told HLN, "I think every attorney does his work differently, they have their own professional ethic. I respect this professional (Altez) but his actions point to (wanting) to nullify the preliminary investigation. But like I said he had all the guarantees of the due process."
