Joni Ernst, candidate for U.S. Senate, grew up castrating hogs on a farm in Iowa

Republican Iowa U.S. Senate candidate, Joni Ernst, came into the national spotlight with an ad that stirred some controversy and is possibly "making 'em squeal" in the nation's capital. According to a report yesterday on MSNBC.com, Ersnt has even caught the attention of Sarah Palin and has received the former governor of Alaska's political endorsement.

While growing up on an Iowa farm, Ernst learned a special skill, and plans to take that skill to Washington, D.C., if she gets elected.

Castration.

Her campaign ad about said subject, has drawn a great deal of attention. The ad goes like this:

"I'm Joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm. So when I get to Washington, I'll know how to cut pork," U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst says in her campaign ad.

A background voice introduces her: "Joni Ernst. Mother, soldier, conservative."

Joni Ernst continues, "My parents taught us to live within our means. It’s time to force Washington to do the same; to cut wasteful spending, repeal Obamacare, and balance the budget. I’m Joni Ernst and I approve this message because Washington’s full of big spenders."

Ominously ending, "Let’s make ‘em squeal."

Ouch.

Depending on who you listen to, Ernst either hit a home run with the ad, or Ernst has become a laughing stock of the political world.

For example, Herman Cain is a huge fan of the ad, although it is unclear if he is a fan of castration. Conservative Jan Mickelson, an influential morning host on WHO in Radio in Des Moines, likes the ad and Ernst very much too. No comment on the castration part however.

Jimmy Fallon ridiculed the ad and did focus on the castration part.

So did Stephen Colbert who played a clip from Joni Ernst's ad "Squeal" on "The Colbert Report" last night, saying Republicans in the past recruited "serious people like Sharron Angle and Richard Mourdock" for U.S. Senate.

"The GOP has stepped up its game with even credible-er candidates like Iowas Joni Ernst, whos running on a platform everyone can get behind," Colbert played just the first line of Ernst's ad: "I'm joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm."

"Sold!" Colbert said and made a scissor-cutting motion with his fingers. "Joni, you had me at castration." Colbert adds: "Folks, it does not matter what else she stands for. I am pulling for her whole hog, or whatever is left of the hog when she is done with this."
