JonBenet Ramsey grand jury voted indict parents in 1999; DA refused prosecution

A little over 13 years ago, Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter spoke to the media concerning the grand jury investigation into the mysterious death of JonBenet Ramsey, the darling child pageant beauty who captivated a nation. According to a report in the Main Line Media News on Jan. 28, what the DA didn’t tell the horde of reporters was the outcome of the grand jury’s vote.

What he did say was this:

"I and my prosecution task force believe we do not have sufficient evidence to warrant a filing of charges against anyone who has been investigated at this time."

That announcement came on Oct. 13, 1999, nearly three years after the Christmas night death of the 6 year old little girl with the adorable ringlets. What was held back at that time was that the grand jury voted to indict both John and Patsy Ramsey of JonBenet’s death, charging child abuse resulting in death. Hunter refused to sign the indictment because he believed he didn’t have enough evidence to make the case beyond reasonable doubt.

One juror who spoke to reporters said, "We didn't know who did what but we felt the adults in the house may have done something that they certainly could have prevented, or they could have helped her, and they didn't."

Bill Wise, the former Boulder First Assistant District Attorney confirmed the jury’s vote, adding, "It names both of them, John and Patsy Ramsey."

Had the Ramsey’s been charged with child abuse resulting in death, either knowingly or recklessly, they would have faced from four to 48 years in prison for the Class II felony if convicted.
