JonBenet Ramsey, a six-year-old girl living with her parents in Boulder, Colorado died 17 years ago Thursday, according to a Dec. 26 WebPro News report. Today, her case is still unsolved and her killer remains unknown. For the past four years however, one Boulder reporter has been writing a book about one of the city’s most famous unsolved murder cases. The book, “Mr. Ramsey, Listen Carefully!: Facts, Fictions, Lies and Legends in the Murder of JonBenet Ramsey” is slated for publication next year.
According to Boulder’s Daily Camera News, author Paula Woodward a former investigative reporter for 9News anticipates the book will be published next year in paperback by Kensington Publishing Corp.
The story of the young girl whose body was discovered by her father 17 years ago on Dec. 26, has baffled and fascinated those familiar with the case for years. JonBenet’s mother, Patsy Ramsey, at the time, reported finding a ransom note in the family’s upscale home, demanding over $100,000 for JonBenet’s safe return. The young beauty queen reportedly sustained head injuries and suffered asphyxiation.
The case was handled by then-Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter who refused to prosecute the case for lack of sufficient evidence. Recently disclosed legal documents show that a grand jury heard extensive evidence in this case, and indicted both parents for child abuse resulting in death and accessories to a crime, Boulder’s Daily Camera reports.
Patsy Ramsey died of cancer in June 2006, and John Ramsey currently lives outside Colorado. The couple was exonerated by former District Attorney Mary Lucy based on DNA evidence in July 2008.
According to author Woodward, her highly anticipated book is being written with John Ramsey’s cooperation. “I visited with him in Charlevoix (Mich.) in 2009 and asked him to participate in the book, and explained my reasons for doing the book,” she said. “I have cooperation from John Ramsey, from law enforcement people, from Ramsey attorneys, from people involved on the periphery. A lot of people seemed willing to talk. Some were anonymous, but they are known to me -- and my editor, of course.”
While Woodward does not know the publication date of her 400-page book, pre-orders are already making their rounds on Amazon, which shows a tentative publication date of Aug. 26, 2014.
