One brief moment from a high school basketball game in Texas has generated a video that has gone viral and warmed the hearts of everybody who has watched it. Bleacher Report shared the details on Feb. 26 of Mitchell Marcus from El Paso's Coronado High School and the opportunity Jonathon Montanez gave him that he will surely never forget.
Mitchell Marcus loves basketball and has been a team manager with his high school team all season. He also happens to be developmentally disabled. The coach told him to suit up for the final regular game of the season, but he didn't tell Marcus why. As it turned out, the coach planned to put Marcus in the game during the final moments so he could have his big moment playing on the court. The coach notes that he planned to do this whether the team was winning or losing, even if it might cost them the game.
With just a couple of minutes left, Mitchell Marcus entered the game. His teammates got the ball to him several times, but he wasn't able to score a basket. Then, something pretty darn amazing happened. With just seconds remaining, a player from the other team, Jonathon Montanez, called Mitchell's name and passed him the ball. Montanez even motioned to Mitchell to throw the basket, which he did. Marcus scored and the gymnasium erupted in cheers. Mitchell Marcus was surrounded by the crowd rushing the court and he had his big moment in the game.
The basket Mitchell Marcus scored didn't lead to the win, as Coronado was already ahead by that point. However, for Marcus this was surely a moment that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Jonathon Montanez says that he simply was raised to treat others as he wants to be treated, and he thought Mitchell deserved his chance to score. These two impressive young men created a moment that has gone viral online, giving everybody who watches a heartfelt reminder about what great sportsmanship really looks like on the court.
