Each week during the high school sports season the High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations to Marc at easternmainesportsblog@yahoo.com.

2013 Fall season- Week 5- September 30th- October 6th

Male

Jonathan Santiago- MCI- football- Rushed for 255 yards and four touchdowns in 41-7 victory over John Bapst.

Santiago has led the Huskies to a 5-0 record this season. They have outscored their opponents 251-49.

Santiago is the first student/athlete from MCI to earn athlete of the week.

Runner up

Cole Beal- Jonesport-Beals- soccer- Had four goals in a 4-3 overtime win over Woodland. The senior striker also had two goals in 2-0 victory over Machias.

Other nominations

Trevor Lyford- Penquis- soccer- Had two goals and one assist in 4-3 win over Dexter.

Jay Bishop- Bangor Christian- soccer- Recorded a hat trick in 7-0 win over Machias.Had one assist in 6-0 victory over Searsport.

Nick Fortier- PCHS- soccer- The freshman scored the game winning goal with 1:40 left in the game in 2-1 victory over Lee. Fortier literally threw himself at the ball sliding feet first redirecting the ball in to the net. It was not pretty but it got the job done. Pure grit and determination.

Nick Lane- Katahdin- soccer- The sophomore had three goals and one assist in 8-0 victory over Hodgdon.

Hunter Smith- Foxcroft- football- Had 150 yards and three touchdown on nine receptions in 20-19 loss to Waterville.

Noah Kershner- Nokomis- football- Rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Andrew Speed- Central- soccer- Recorded a hat trick and had two assist in 9-1 victory over Dexter. Had one goal and one assist in 7-0 victory over Mattanawcook.

Hampden Academy offensive line- football- for their play in the 21-13 win over Lawrence at home. They set the tone, leading to 236 yards on the ground and two rushing TDs.

Andrew Prescott- Central- soccer-Recorded two goals and two assists in 7-0 victory over Mattanawcook. Had one goal and one assist in 9-1 victory over Dexter.

Nate Burns-PCHS- soccer- scored two goals in 3-2 victory over Foxcroft. and scored the equalizer at the end of the first half with only 50 seconds left and then scored the go ahead goal with 8 min left in regulation.

Marc Morneault- Stearns- football- Rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries in 28-22 win over Washington Academy.
