Jon Weems inspires everyone with his positive attitude and music

Jonathan Weems has lived an exceptional life.  Born with a love and passion for music, he has let nothing stop him from pursuing this dream of a musical career; including the accident in July of 1992.

As a child he took piano and guitar lessons.  In the 6th grade he started playing the trumpet in the school band; in high school he played the trumpet and baritone in the symphonic band, snare drum in the marching band, and guitar and bass guitar in the stage band.  After graduating he continued to play guitar and keyboards.  His pursuit of music led him to start writing music with a friend who played drums and percussion and was a very good lyricist.

But his music career took a detour in July 1992.

Jon was injured in a diving accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. His level C6 injury doesn’t mean he is completely paralyzed; he still as use of most of his arms, but not of his hands and fingers.  Surrounded by positive inspirations, he strives to achieve all his dreams.

How does Jon Weems create music with no use of his hands and fingers?

He creates music with the help of typing sticks that fit over each hand that he uses to play his keyboard.  Through sequencers (one note melody for many measures which allows the ability to add on to that part of the rhythm parts, counter melodies, etc), his keyboard sequencer allows for up to 80 sequences which all fit together like a puzzle to make a song.

Although the process is time consuming, he relishes in the joy of listening to the music knowing he wrote, played, sang and recorded every note. Per Jon, “The biggest problem I have is coming up with lyrics.  I realize I am not a poet by any means, but I'm satisfied with what I write.”

Jon Weems is a talented lyricist; he has written and performed music that inspires all who listen:

  • I Will Praise Him
  • I Know You Believe In Me
  • His Love
  • You Always Amaze Me
  • He Lives
  • Heavens Gift
  • Wishing Wells
  • Live for Today

And numerous other songs of inspiration … check here to download and enjoy.

He performs locally and anywhere he is called; from churches to TV. Jon was interviewed on WDBJ Channel 7 Roanoke where he performed “Spread the Love.” His positive outlook keeps him on the road in his custom painted wheelchair accessible van.

Jon is co-hosting the Ms. Wheelchair VA 2012-2013 Gala with Miss Virginia, Elizabeth Crot at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center on March 17th.
