The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards took place on Jan. 12, 2014, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Here is what this Golden Globe winner said backstage in the Golden Globe Awards press room.

JON VOIGHT

Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

("Ray Donovan")

You often walk a red carpet by wearing a scarf. That has to be more than a scarf. Is there a story, is it good luck or what?

I’ll tell you the story of the scarf. I went to the Academy Awards once earlier in my career — might have been for “Midnight Cowboy,” maybe “Deliverance,” maybe “Coming Home” — and I jumped. As do you these things, you don’t really think much about it. You get a suit, and I put the shirt on and the collar was too tight, and I couldn’t close the collar.

I didn’t know what to do, and I had a driver picking me up at a certain time and all of that. So I went by this haberdash store and said, “Hold on a second, let me jump out.” I said, “I need something, give me that scarf there, I will put it on.”

So I put the scarf on thinking I could get away with something, that they wouldn’t notice. I had no tie. I had an open shirt. And the next day, they have these fashion police come out, and they said, “Only Jon Voight could get away with an open shirt; he was absolutely dazzling.”

So I said, “That’s it, it’s the scarf,” and I wore it a couple more times. Then it became something associated with me, so I have worn it ever since. I have given my original away, then I got this one, and it has been around for a while.

Jon, what’s been your proudest moment in your career?

Oh, my proudest moment in my career. Lots of it has to do, I suppose most, with my children. That’s the primary. The kids are happy and doing well, and I am proud. In terms of my career, I have been very fortunate. I have worked with so many great people, and I wasn’t as zealous as I would have liked to have been out there tonight because of getting ready with the music.

But so many people out there, I know them all. I know what we’ve gone through, and they have done so much great work. And this year, I have to say, is an extraordinary year. When I grew up, I grew up in the Golden Age. You know, I was a young man, a little boy in the ’40s, and then all those films meant a lot to me.

Then we went through lots of things. There’s always been great films. Then there was another rush of great energy in my generation. It seems to me now, looking at the films we have today and the artists, I am saying something else had happened. We had broadened the base being done, there are visionary people doing work, and I am very proud of this industry at this moment in time and proud that I could be a little part of it today.

Do your grandchildren also know they are a big star, just like their mom and dad?

ZZ says to me, “You’re old. You’re an old man.” Then I said that to Pax, and he says, “You’re not old.” The only thing I care about is that they identify I have energy and I can still play pretty well, but they don’t think of me like that.

I want to say one other thing. The Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, I was there at the beginning with them, of my career, when they were just asking people to come to it. It wasn’t on television, and we had some very funny things because it wasn’t on television.

A lot of crazy people said a lot of crazy things, and it was fun. We had a lot of laughs, but then they brought the cameras in, but they kept the dinners and the tables and all of that. It has really developed. It is the first thing of the season, and it is a spectacular show, and I am very proud of it.
