Jon Gosselin: A man of many women and many faiths

Jon Gosselin has rediscovered his Jewish roots. In a recent interview with ParentDish.com, Jon discussed his girlfriend Hailey Glassman and claimed to be half Jewish. "Hailey is Jewish. Everyone in my life now is Jewish, my attorney. I love it. I am now half Jewish and half Korean."

As a fan of Jon and Kate Plus Eight, I can't help but remember the many references on the show by the Gosselins to their Christian faith. There were the bible verses taped to the walls of their home and the episodes chronicling them attending church as a family. Several of their daughter's middle names are even fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the first four seasons, Jon and Kate appeared to be committed Christians. Their marriage wasn't perfect (anyone could see that) and their life wasn't perfect. It was full of stress and tension, but also joy and happiness, which is part of what made Jon and Kate so popular. They seemed to be like the rest of us: two flawed Christian parents trying to survive the baby years with their relationship intact.

And survive they did. To celebrate, the entire family traveled to Hawaii for Jon and Kate renew their vows after nine years of marriage. All eight of their children sat on the front row and watched as their parents recommitted themselves to each other until death do us part.

Of course, as we all know, less than a year later it all fell apart. Jon and Kate filed for divorce, and Kate cried on TV while Jon ran around with numerous women, partied all over the globe, and told interviewers that he despised his soon to be ex-wife.

With Jon now claiming to be Jewish, the question arises: Does Jon Gosselin even know who he is or what he believes in? Or is his behavior, identity, and faith simply absorbed from the individuals that surround him?

Jon Gosselin spent his twenties as a committed father, husband, and Christian, surrounded by his wife, children, and fellow Christians. Now in his early thirties, Jon has kicked off this decade of his life as a partying playboy claiming to be Jewish, surrounded by women, party pals, lawyers and fellow Jews.

If Jon has genuinely rediscovered his Jewish heritage, I applaud him. If he has found his true faith in Judaism, I sincerely hope it meets his needs and feeds his soul.

But Jon seems much more like a man moving through his life adopting the identities, behaviors, and faiths of those around him, whether it be Christianity or Judaism or whatever else he may "discover" down the road, because he has no real identity or core values of his own.

As a result, Jon Gosselin will most likely continue to be a man easily dominated by others (like he was by Kate) who loses himself in the people around him with a life marked by poor choices and erratic behavior.

Very well said! Poor weak minded fellow...need lots of prayers!

Bravo! When the dust settles, my hope is that Kate will have learned an important lesson about letting go and not being so controlling, and that Jon Gosselin will finally figure out who he is and get back to being a father to his kids instead of running around like a fat middle aged man with mid life crisis. And I hope this is all done out of the public eye so that their kids can have normal lives as they get older.

Re: "appeared to be committed christians"; "two flawed christian parents"; "as a committed father, husband, and christian"...

Personally I'm not religious at all, but shouldn't the word Christian, whether used nominally or an adjective, be capitalized? Or did this columnist simply forget to run the article through a spelling/grammar checker?

He's *clearly* joking. Come on. J + K are idiots but don't bother taking the obvious jokes seriously, people.

Very well said, indeed. I agree with each and every word, especially the last paragraph. Jon has no personality of his own, he loses himself in the people around him. Sad, very sad. For himself and his children. I don't think he is a bad person, though. But he is so immature emotionally that he can't help but make poor choices. He doesn't know who he is, obviously, so he is like a chameleon reflecting the "colors" of the people around him.

Very accurate assessment of Jon Gosselin, Taylor...and it makes me feel sad for him. He's so pitifully misguided in thinking that some person or group of people that he latches onto can rescue him. They can support him, but there's only one Rescuer, and somewhere deep inside Jon knows who that is.
