Jolom Maya'etik - Mayan Women Weavers event at Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts

Celia Santíz Ruiz, co-founder and President of Jolom Maya'etik Coop (Mayan Women Weavers), is holding events at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA) on Saturday May 15, 2010. Jolom Maya'etik is an independent, women-run cooperative, founded in 1996 by Tzotzil and Tseltal indigenous artisan women from the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico.

At 2 pm, MCCLA is hosting an exchange event of Bay Area women artisans and weavers. All women, especially immigrant female artisans are welcome. Participants are invited to bring work samples to share. The exchange will begin with a short introduction from MCCLA, Associacion MAYAB, and Celia Santíz Ruiz.

At 4 pm, Ruiz will talk about the social and economic challenges faced by indigenous women in Chiapas. The lecture is open to the public and will be translated into English. She will also address the indigenous women's rights in the age of the "globalized" Mexico, and how cooperatives like Jolom Maya'etik are providing concrete alternatives to domestic servitude and early marriage for young women from indigenous communities. Weavings will be offered for sale after the presentation.

Jolom Maya'etik is comprised of over 300 indigenous women who produce traditional products to sell at fair prices. They participate in social, political and economic forums which provide the possibility for increased economic and political autonomy for Indigenous women.

When: Saturday May 15, 2010
Times: 2 pm Gathering for Immigrant Women Artisans (in Spanish)
4 pm Presentation by Celia Santíz Ruiz (in English and Spanish, open to the public)
Where: MCCLA Inti-Raymi Gallery, 2868 Mission Street, San Francisco
