For craft beer nerds and aficionados of sour beers, hearing the name Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales is enough to send shivers down their spine. For those not familiar, you soon will be. The Dexter, Michigan brewery has been expanding is distribution as of late and Texas is next on the list. This coming Monday, July 14 Jolly Pumpkin will begin its statewide launch into the Lonestar State, continuing through Wednesday, hitting Dallas, Austin, Houston and in San Antonio to start.
We’ll see many of Jolly Pumpkin’s year round offerings at first. “Look for Maracaibo Especial, Calabaza Blanca, Biere de Mars and Oro de Calabaza in bottles, with Bam Biere, Bam Noire and Oro de Calabaza in kegs,” advised Flood Independent Distribution representative John Kline. Who also advised “that the brewery expects to add special releases and seasonals down the road,” such as the popular La Roja, their take on traditional Flanders Red Ale.
Flood is a relatively new distributor in Texas covering most of the Interstate 35 corridor from Dallas to San Antonio, as well as Houston. Their portfolio already includes another brewery known for its sours, Austin’s Jester King Craft Brewery.
Jolly Pumpkin’s foray into open fermented, barrel aged goodness began in 2004 by renowned brewer Ron Jeffries, who along with a select crew, has built Jolly Pumpkin into one the most sought after breweries. In addition to the production facility, they have opened up two brewpubs in Michigan as well, one in Ann Arbor and the other in Traverse City. “At Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales we are dedicated to more than the traditions of old world craftsmanship. Everything we do is designed to create ales of outstanding art and flavor. Focusing on traditional rustic country style beers brought to life through labor and love, we strive to create beers to lighten the spirit and soothe the soul. Sharing our joy to the betterment of mankind is the most that we could hope for" quotes the brewery’s website.
In San Antonio, look for Jolly Pumpkin in many of the usual spots, such as Gabriel’s Super Store, Specs and Central Market. Prices will vary.
