The obesity epidemic in America is alarming. 37.5% of adults in the United States are obese; 17% of children are overweight in our country. Michelle Obama has made it her priority to encourage Americans to eat healthy meals and increase their activity levels, so they can improve their overall health. For working class and poor families, the price of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, fish, meats and poultry is costly. Fortunately, there are programs like Jolin food box, which enables most families to purchase healthy foods at affordable prices.
Cynthia DeSouza, who is the coordinator for the Jolin food box program, which is run from the People’s Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, volunteers for the program by taking the orders for the food boxes and collecting the money for them. DeSouza said that the foods from the boxes are always fresh and varied. She said that there are food boxes containing fruits and vegetables, kitty boxes for children as well as meat, fish and poultry boxes.
“The purpose of Jolin food box is to provide quality food at a discounted price,” DeSouza said. “We do not make any money from the sales of the food boxes.”
DeSouza, who also volunteers for Rebuilding Together Essex County, Beyond The Eyes and IHS Development, said that Jolin food box helps people stretch their budgets in a tough economy. The food boxes come from the Jolin Food Company.
“Joseph is a successful businessman and distributor who owns the Jolin Food Company,” she said. “Joseph created this program to help struggling families, so they are able to eat nutritious meals.”
According to DeSouza, Jolin food box is a new program that is already proving to be successful. She said that they have 10 volunteers working at the People’s Baptist Church, which also runs a soup kitchen, taking orders for food boxes for the month of September.
