Today, the Joliet Police Department issued a warning to motorists about leaving their vehicles unattended. In recent weeks the city of Joliet has experienced a sudden increase in the number of motor vehicle thefts reported, police have noted that the thefts were due primarily to the fact that motorist were leaving their vehicles running unattended with the keys in the ignition. This is an act that is not only unsafe but illegal under Illinois law.

With the holidays in full swing, locals and visitors can ensure themselves of a safe and happy holiday season, whether by their home or out shopping in the malls, by locking their vehicles at all times and removing the keys when unattended. It is also advised that all valued personal items and holiday purchases be hidden out of sight at all times

When the weather is brutally cold motorists are tempted to leave their vehicles running to keep it warm or to defrost it, locals and visitors are reminded that this can be an invitation for thieves to target their vehicle. Joliet police officers remain vigilant in targeting offenders to deter future vehicle thefts hopefully with the help of the public.
