The Dash 4 Dog Tags 5K and 1K Honor Walk will be held on Aug. 30 at 8:30 a.m. at the New London Airport. Funds from the event will provide transportation services for wheelchair bound veterans living in Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Bedford and Campbell to medical appointments at the Salem VA and Lynchburg Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).

Each year, events to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks take place all over the world on or near September 11. Organized by local community volunteers, the 9/11 Heroes Run 5K and 1M fun run/walk will be held on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 16, located at 1301 Greenview Drive in Lynchburg. This is the perfect opportunity for you to join members of the community to come out and thank local veterans, their families and first responders in a family-friendly environment. The 9/11 Heroes Run takes place around the world in communities and on military bases with a goal to never forget the sacrifices of the heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks and the wars since.

The inaugural Lynchburg 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a memorial event to remember the 343 fallen firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Only 343 participants will be permitted in this event, a 110-story stair climb taking place at the Bank of the James in downtown Lynchburg. Although many of the participants will be first responders, the event is open to the public as a fundraiser to support local and national charities that honor, serve and protect the men and women of the fire service and survivors of tragedy. The Lynchburg 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held at 8 a.m. on Sept. 13.

There are many additional running events taking place in Lynchburg before and after the Virginia 10 Miler, but these four events honoring the military and first responder heroes in our community and across the nation offer the opportunity to say thank you to the brave men and women whose mission in life is helping others at home and abroad.
